Malaccans laud their new musical fountainBy MARTIN CARVALHO
MALACCA: The newly-constructed RM1.97mil musical fountain at Malacca’s Dataran Munshi Abdullah has become a big hit among locals.

Located next to Malacca River along Jalan Munshi Abdullah, the fountain is the first here incorporating music and lights.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the fountain was in the state’s ongoing plans to beautify Malacca River while providing new recreational spots for locals and tourists.

“The fountain dances to 10 Malay and Chinese tunes and we are looking at adding traditional tunes from the Indian and Portuguese communities,” he said at the fountain’s soft-launch here on Sunday.

He said the fountain’s operating times would be from 5pm to midnight from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays and would be extended to cover weekdays soon.

“Malacca Historic City Council will fork out RM300 for electricity each month but not the water bill which can run up to RM200 a night,” he said, adding the state would appeal to Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Malacca Water Company for discounts.
Measuring 10m by 20m, the fountain shoots water 18m up in spray patterns synchronising with music and coloured lights.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ali said the fourth phase of the Malacca River beautification project would involve the construction of a 1.5km pedestrian walkway from Tan Kim Seng Bridge to Kampung Morten. The project would be fully completed next year.
